If you read what he did, he erased the 2.2.16-22 modules, but he is
booting from a boot floppy with the 2.2.16-22 kernel, so he doesn't have
a loop.o module for the kernel he is running any more. (This is one of
the reasions why you don't want to use rpm -U to upgrade a kernel!)
