You are right -- the upgrade left me with a mishmash of some old and 
some new XF86. I removed/updated all the XF86 components, unlinked 
the MetroX driver and ran Xconfigurator. Video card, mouse, and 
monitor appear to be recognized correctly. X is linked to correct 
XF86_SVGA. All seems OK.

Mouse is still trapped in lower right corner.

Going to bed now
