A while back someone posted a response to this ping problem. I don't remember what the 
problem was
but I do know how to make the warning go away. Namely I have aliased ping to:

                  alias ping 'ping -U'

according to the ping man page the -U switch:

                  -U      Print true user-to-user latency (the old behaviour).
