Thanks a lot for your reply.

In the meantime, I also found this information in the archives of one of
the Gnome mailing lists:

The developer explains:

"gdm used to save a pointer to libc's passwd struct for later
use. However, some PAM setups change the struct and it usually ends
up containing an entry for root (See Gnome bug #2487).

This has been fixed for some time, but I've been completely swamped at
work. I'll try and make a beta5 release within a day or two."


Only problem is that he wrote that back in November 1999, and to date
I haven't been able to find a beta 5 anywhere on the Internet.  I also
sent a message to him to see if he could help.
