You may want to consider changing the ONBOOT= setting to no, and running
ifup commands from rc.local to bring up the interfaces after everything
is set.  You may also want to consider setting USERCTL to yes, so you
can bring the interfaces up as a normal user.  I find this handy for
laptops so thay do not try to connect to the network when the machine is
being used when not connected to a network or phone line.  (Unless this
machine is strictly a gateway/firewall.)
