How many lines do you have coming into your machine?  Is it a router (i.e. more
then 1 network interfaces living on different networks)?  If not, then you only
have one "line" coming into your box so how would you stop puuting on that one
"line?"

So, do these other people you talk to live on a different network?  If they are
on the same network, then that statement should not affect it at all.  I still
say it lies in your netmask configuration or mis-configuration
