I am having a problem getting XDM to start up properly in runlevel 5 on
an RH 7.2 box. It starts but it does not start the same way as if I
start in runlevel 3, login as root and type xdm at the prompt. If I
start in runlevel 3, the login screen is slightly different but the main
thing is that it responds to XDMCP requests from xterms. If I start in
runlevel 5, it does not respond to XDMCP requests. From what I can
tell, this has something to do with the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file
which is called by runlevel 5 in RedHat. If /etc/intittab is set to
runlevel 5 (id:5:initdefault:) it is actually calling
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon so /etc/X11/prefdm needs to be set
to run XDM.

This is what my /etc/sysconfig/desktop file looks like:

DESKTOP="xdm"

Basically, I want the server to come up to the point that it can respond
to XDMCP requests from xterms without someone having to log in.
