Drop the packaging information with rpm -e (i.e. rpm -e MySQL should get
it).

As root:    /sbin/service mysql restart

NOTE: that might actually be mysqld on the line immediately above. I'm
not at home and can't check it out. Take a look in /etc/init.d to see
which rendition is in there if you have questions.

Tarball? Unless you compiled it, this won't have any effect on anything.

Maybe somebody can provide better help than this if it still fails. I
wanted to reply since it was urgent. But I'm at work and any mail I
receive from the list here is spotty.
