 That was what I was trying to tell. Plus that "c:\fdisk /mbr" does not wipe 
the bootsector, but instead installs a dos master boot loader. And that it 
doesn't show you the contents of the bootsector.
 Pointing to dd and hexdump, explaining the position of the partition table 
and the magical number in the MBR etc would have been more appropriate as an 
answer, but luckily that has been done already.
