Cross posting my reply to the Enigma list:

I'm not sure it applies to cdrw using scsi emulation, but cdrom
difficulties under 7.2 are a known problem. See:
https://www.redhat.com/support/resources/gotchas/7.2/

Applying the updates may solve the issue. The current kernel is 2.4.9-13,
and there are a lot of other updates as well.

The command:
depmod -ae
Might also help.
