Have you tried starting it with SWAT?  Follow these directions
http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba-binaries/2001-May/000216.html. 
Then point your browser to http://localhost:901.  (Make sure httpd is
running first.)  The SWAT page should come up.  You can start Samba from
the Status page of SWAT.  Good luck,
