That should read the sendmail.mc file.

The command 'm4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/sendmail.cf' overwrites 
sendmail.cf when it is run, thus your changes were lost.

Edit sendmail.mc, rerun the commands, and you should be all set.
My apologies for the file name slip up.
