I don't run up2date in GUI mode, but I also saw a couple of crashes 
yesterday. What I did was:
rm -f /var/spool/up2date/*.hdr
rpm --rebuilddb

Not sure either actually helped, but up2date did complete successfully 
later in the day when I tried again. I just run 'up2date -u' from the 
command line.
