You could do it differently.  Do an up2date -l, then pick a few at a time 
to update.  Obviously takes more time, but would work.

Another option would be, rather than reinstalling the OS and 
repartitioning, to install an additional hard drive, move the contents of 
/var to it, and then to mount it as /var, instead.
