gack! well i'm both proud and disappointed to say this is the first time redhat 7.2 has TOTALLY LOCKED up on me.
"Too many open files in system" was the response to any command, including ps or reboot! how would i gather more information if/when this happens to me again? i really hate having had to press reset without shedding any further light on what happened. i'm not particularly enticed by the notion of kernel hacking right now, but if there were a useful way to gather relevant information, without having to read into volumes of documentation regarding kernel hacking, perhaps i should know.. what happened was my keyboard and mouse suddenly locked up, ignoring even my attempts to switch to Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F2. surprisingly, i was able to get in via ssh from another machine, but then attempts to do even ps or reboot just gave "Too many open files in system". what i was doing was interacting with ximian evolution. yeah yeah i know redhat doesn't support it. but i thought i could be proud that wayward apps generally can't bring down linux. looks like maybe that's not completely true. is it actually likely that i need a kernel with capability for more open files? i'm running the stock redhat 7.2 kernel. at the time, i was running a rather typical (for me) array of apps.. ximian desktop, ximian evolution, galeon, kde 3.0-beta-2, konqueror, konsole, several bash invocations, screen, a couple ssh invocations, and my usual array of system services, like what's running now, to wit: j000 TTY SESS TPGID PGRP PPID PID STARTED WCHAN STAT COMMAND j001 ?
