Looking at my (sketchy) notebook, here are some of the steps I took when installing an Epson 636U USB flatbed scanner in Red Hat 7.2:
chmod 666 /dev/usb/scanner0 I think /dev/usbscanner is linked to /dev/usb/scanner0 on my system.
