The arrow keys work fine for me. The reason that the _primary_ keys for moving around are a bit strange is that it is the least demanding for your fingers (you don't have to stretch or hunt for keys), thus keeping you from pain in your hands and helping you accomplish your goals faster. That said, the vi that comes with Red Hat allows you to use arrow keys if you really want to, although I find the letter keys easier. If this isn't working for you, I don't know how to fix it, but someone else on the list probably does.
