Ed,

If all else fails, you may try also a possible solution below I
found on a Google Groups search. My RedHat 6.0 SCSI How-To also refers
to this problem with some Adaptec 154x cards.

I just want to thank all the people that tried to help me with my
Adaptec 1542
and Slackware 3.0 problem. As it turns out, some of the Adaptec 15xx
cards get
messed up when the Slackware or Redhat Boot disks go looking for the
cards. The
BusLogic scan before the Adaptec one screws up the Adaptec card
temporarily. The
fix is to at the Boot: prompt assign a strict Base address to the
Adaptec and a
bogus one to the BusLogic. i.e. if Adaptec installed at 0x330 use the
following:

Boot: ramdisk adaptec=0x330 buslogic=0x334 <---- Slackware
Boot: linux adaptec=0x330 buslogic=0x334 <---- Red Hat

Thanks again and happy Linuxing! ;)

At the first install screen, you could try the 'boot: linux
adaptec=0x330 buslogic=0x334' lines. You may also try changing the
'adaptec=0x330' to 'aha1542=0x330'. It seems that some 1542s were
plug-n-play aware and some weren't. Mine is a 1542CF, and I distictly
remember having to use "Expert" mode, but I assumed it was because the
bios of my machine refused to find the card at the adaptec "default"
of 0x330 - I ended up using 0x180 instead.
  Happy hacking !!!

                                     Tom
