If I'm not mistaken, wipe is IBM specific, and it's not actually a low level format, though many drive manufacturers are calling it that, it's a zero fill utility which writes zeroes to the entire drive.
The debug script I sent along in an earlier email does the same thing except it only writes the mbr with zeroes. It's perfectly safe to use. I've used it so many times I've memorized it.
