Um, I always thought it was "linux single" (no CAPS).  

And for the "linux" part, actually substitute the kernel name you are
using (look for "label=" in /etc/lilo.conf); I sometimes have several
kernels, an official Red Hat one, and maybe a couple -ac development
kernels.  I can boot any of them in single user.
