Forget about the rest of the details. You probably screwed something up in the Apache config file (httpd.conf). I had a similar problem last week. If there's something wrong with your Apache config file, Apache simply won't start up. To find out what may be going on, run the utility -- apachectl ... type "apachectl configtest" at a command line prompt. Check "man apachectl" for more information. Good hunting!
