Everything I've seen suggests that Samba simply writes the incoming data
to a spool file, then uses a system call to run the appropriate program to
actually print the file. Samba includes default commands for several
printing systems, but will use whatever print command is specified in
either the global or share section.

The little I found about Samba and CUPS suggests that Samba doesn't do
anything significantly different with CUPS. It still writes a spool file
and calls the appropriate print command. I'm not sure why that didn't work
when you tried it with my script.

If I ever have reason to use Samba and CUPS with the script, I'll update
the script's documentation to cover any differences between configuration
for CUPS and the traditional BSD style print system.
