If you want help with the tuxmonkey (issue tracker) I cannot promise anything, but if you mail the developer he is generally a nice guy (I work with him) and he might throw you a pointer here and there. With the appropriate modules you would not have to read /etc/shadow as thats what the modules do for you with the assistance of pam.
