If you're using Grub, it's really easy. Below are a couple of lines from my /etc/grub.conf file:
<snip> title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-17.8.0smp) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-17.8.0smp ro root=LABEL=/ hda=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi <snip> My system sees the CD as /hda & the CD-RW as /hdc.
