the palm is easy if it's a palm or handspring. Just hit the hotsync button on the cradle then run the command dmesg to see which USB port it's using. The dev's that you're looking for are under /dev/usb/ttyUSB#. All three palm/handsprings that I've set up have been using /dev/usb/ttyUSB1 which I ln -s 'd to /dev/pilot.
