Why?  Red Hat distributes pre-built 2.4.18 kernels that actually work.

It can work... it's just a warning.

However, despite the advice you've been given, I find that it's much
easier to install LILO (or GRUB) on the MBR, and use them to boot
Windows.

Build a kernel with more modules, and less built in.  Either that, or
use Red Hat's.
