The answer is my favorite: it depends. My system is static and stand-alone. I edit /etc/hosts to map the IP I have with the name I want (e.g. 192.168.0.137\tWartHog) Then, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 has the line IPADDR=192.168.0.137 and /etc/sysconfig/network has the HOSTNAME=WartHog line.
Until name/address administration cashes a Sanity Cheque the information is spread in several files that must cohere. Now: If your IP is dynamic (DHCP for example) or if another machine administers the name/address set (DNS or YP for example) the above 'help' is confusion and distraction. >>-----Original Message----- >>From: Tianran Chen [mailto:me@;chentianran.net] >>Sent: Friday, November 15, 2002 2:28 AM >>To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>Subject: How to change my own host name? >> >> >>How can I change the host name of my host?
