I don't know if this is *optimal*, but it fixed that issue (along with lots
of others) for me:
/etc/sysconfig/i18n
LANG="en_US"
SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en"
SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"
