Thanks to all the suggestions on this list I've also managed to work 
out the problem here.  In my /etc/sysconfig/network file I changed 
the option FORWARD_IPV4=false to true and it started working.  Now to 
sort out link management - redial on link failure and the like - and 
I'll be happy...  :)

Thanks once again to the list participants that helped get me this 
far.
