Was that really the discussion that you started with?

Wow, you were right and you weren't even part of the discussion. Impressive.

Rest Pedro and start Stanton. The chances of winning the series is
better that way. I was proven right. A bunch of guys were saying that you
have to win the next game. Thus you have to pitch Pedro on 3 days rest. Hooey.

I take a large issue with the "flat" issue. I don't think Baseball is a
game of passion like Football or Hockey. Quite the contrary, trying to hard can
have an adverse affect on performance.

On a lighter note, I'd like to take this moment to wish us all a happy
anniversary. It was 10 years ago this month a few of us began emailing with
each other to chronicle the historic first (and ultimately disappointing)
battle between teh Sox and Yankees in 99. The emails grew into a listserve that
you see and enjoy today.

        Hard to believe.

Kidding aside, this is a common theme on the debates on this board.
Ray leads the numbers only camp. John (I think) leads the intuition camp (Ray
would say witchcraft camp). I think there is more intuition that Ray thinks
and more to the numbers than John thinks. This is why I’ve come around on
Francona. I think he walks this line very, very well.

Sox will win tonight. Becket has an extra gear in the playoffs.

Well I FEEL that they were 3000 miles away, tense in the play-offs, and
playing until their body clock of 1AM, starting at a time when they would
normally wind down at home on the couch. It matters. But they’ll be back
today. Just wait and see.

The numbers actually support your hyphothesis.

I was listening to Felger and Mazz on the Sports Hub yesterday. (As an
aside, a vast improvement over the Big Show. I highly recommend setting your
dial to 98.5 rather than 850. Or, visit, 985thesportshub.com
<http://985thesportshub.com/> and listen online.)

Anyway, some Globe or Boston.com reporter ran the numbers. The Sox are
hitting something like .217 against the best pitchers in the league (not sure
of the number or how they're defined, but I'll trust the reporter.) League
average against those same pitchers is .240.

The Angels hit .270 against those same pitchers.

Seriously though, what I said was that the team is not hitting. Call
it "flat", call it "lack of momentum", call it a random period of bad luck,
whatever, hitting has been a problem against good teams lately (ie. the Yankees
in September). Ray asked "why is it bad hitting and not good pitching?" and I
used Lackey's stats to illustrate my point that while Lackey (and Darren
Oliver) are good pitchers, we are making any decent pitcher look like a Cy
Young candidate right now.

Maybe that will change tonight. I certainly hope so.

Yeah, you're right, I don't mean to take
anything away from Lackey. He was good. I just think we made him look better
than he really is last night. On the season the guy has a 1.27 WHIP, 3.83 ERA
and a .263 BAA. Good numbers, but remember that he's pitching a lot of those
games against the depths of the AL West. For the game last night he was 0.67
WHIP, 0.0 ERA and .153 BAA. You would think an offense like ours should be
able to produce at least average numbers against him.

In general I just feel like our bats are not
producing. Plus I knew I would get a rise out of you if I mentioned anything
about momentum, streaks or trends.
