I disagree re: the hitting - or rather, a brushback pitch. It's been in the game forever and is certainly a 'part' of the game. The problem these days is, 1) pitchers don't know how to do it (heck, they barely pitch inside any more), 2) players don't understand that it's part of the game - 'show me up and I will show you up' and charge the mound at the slightest provocation and 3) umpires are too quick to warn teams and throw pitchers out.
If Burnett had any balls, he would have plunked Papi the first time he came up with no one on base.
