He had me until he uncorked this gem of baseball logic: The Red Sox are 56-18 when they score first this season. The chances of scoring first are a lot better with Buchholz on the mound than Lackey, who has a 5.62 ERA in the first inning. Buchholz has a 3.21.
Err...I'll bet dollars to donuts that the Sox have a high winning percentage when they score a lot of runs and their opponents score few runs. And I'll bet that when they score a lot of runs and their opponents score few runs that they probably score first. The scoring-first thing makes no difference. It's the not-letting-up-runs thing that counts. Ray PS. This stat can be turned the other way to show that the Sox are a bunch of quitters. They're 18-56 when the other team scores first. Apparently no come back ability?
