I buy the proposition, and would add Randy Johnson and the Yankees as an
exhibit for that town (and maybe Burnett as well).
But how do you determine that? Renteria was a very good player in his previous
stops, and afterwards as well. So how could
Theo have determined that he would not work in Boston?

This leads me to a question for the esteemed board:

The proposition is: Theo fails to take into account the challenge of playing in
Boston when he cuts free agent deals:

Exhibit A: Orlando Cabrera. Was immediately comfortable with team and town.
Theo ignored that and signed Renteria, whom he'd longlusted after. Didn't go
well. (And I know there were other issues there.)

Exhibit B: Jason Bay. Maybe an overrated player, but he worked in Boston.
Theo's two attempts to fill the LF gap (Mike Cameron to CF, Ellsbury to LF;
Crawford) have been disasters.

Exhibit C: Alex Gonzalez. Had two productive stints with Sox, pushed out by
Theo both times --first for Julio Lugo (catastrophe) and then for Marco
Scutaro, who's been useful but less productive for more money than Gonzalez.

Exhibit D: Lackey. Not sure anyone expected him to be this bad but the guy's
always been a head case. The Angels didn't seem too broken up by his departure.

And I haven't even gone into JD Drew...

We'll have to eat his salary as we did with Renteria.

But given Lackey's horrendous season, how can we expect anybody to take him off
our hands? The best that we can hope for is he rebounds enough for someone else
to want him.
