On the other hand, my faith in my understanding of baseball is restored. A
the end of last season, we were presented with the idea that a highly
talented baseball team could collapse due to nothing but the manager's loss
of control of some of the veterans along with some beer and chicken.

Francona and Theo threw around a lot of bullshit about "not fighting for
each other on the field" and such, and how the Sox needed a new voice.

They didn't. What the Sox needed was for Dice-K, Lackey, and Crawford to
deliver the goods. They needed Youk and Pedroia to be healthy. The needed
players who could physically do the job, and the didn't have them.

The Red Sox didn't lose because Francona lost his connection to the
players. Francona lost his connection to the players because the team was
losing. These guys were being force-fed a giant reality sandwich and they
didn't like it.

This myth that a bad clubhouse killed the club allowed us to believe that a
new manager and a group of penitent pitchers would solve the problem. But
it can't because the problem is that we don't have Dice K, Lackey, or
Crawford in the lineup. We let Papelbon go, hired a new closer, and saw
that guy go on the DL.

We're left with a middlin' team that will score a ton of runs (perhaps more
than any other team) but will probably not make the playoffs and certainly
can't beat Playoff pitching.
