I agree re: Verlander. They had a great approach against him.

Re: Bard - interesting comment made by one of the color guys on the ESPN
broadcast last night, either Boone or Sutcliffe... They
said that unless Bard works out to be a #1 or #2 (and maybe a #3) starter, then
the move to make him a starter is basically a failure,
as he was so effective as a late-innings guys in the bullpen. The team probably
needs to re-assess where they are at with him at the
end of the season, see if they really think he can be that top-of-the-rotation
guy. I think he has the stuff to do that - maybe not a #1 - but
the question is, can he just let it go and not think too much. I suspect he
might have been further along with a guy like Varitek behind
the plate.

I don't think its a matter of pacing himself, so much as a matter of keeping
his brain out of his pitching.

Bard has the stretches where Annie Savoy would have handed the glove to Millie
and said, "Here we go."  His pitches aren't even close to the strike zone.
It's telling that this happened to him twice with a number nine batter whose
OPS was in the 5's.  He's clearly over-thinking.

That said, I thought the Sox did a great job against Verlander, even without
Pedroia.
