Given the state of the Sox right now (only 3 'experienced' Sox players in the line-up yesterday, down offensively but getting decent pitching and with the AS break almost upon us and "only" 7.5 games behind the Yankees with a 4-game set about to start), I am still feeling cautiously optimistic about the 2H of the year. Yeah, crazy, but I figure that they can't play much more inconsistently than they already have. And with the troops getting healthy - might we actually have our projected starting outfield of Crawford, Ellsbury and Ross/Sweeney after the break? - and assuming the pitching stays decent - especially the bullpen - I can see the team making some sort of run in the second half. Not blistering like last year, but perhaps enough to get them into the play-offs.
Seems to me the main competition for the second WC will be among Tampa Bay/Cleveland/Baltimore/Detroit (assuming division winners NYY - CWS - Rangers and the Angels the other WC). With the addition assumption of good health in the second half, I don't see why the Sox couldn't be competitive with any of those teams. BTW, I will be going to Fenway during our annual sojourn to The Cape - but it will be to see Springsteen perform!
