Maybe we can hit McClure for not being John Farrell, but it's a bit reductionist to lay this all at the pitching coach's feet. A lot of these problems are 1. personnel; and 2. holdovers from last year's collapse. This is a bullpen cobbled together with spare parts. The Bard experiment was a disaster, largely, it seems, because he's a mental puddle. Beckett has continued his September swoon. Lackey is out for the year. Dice-K is a mess and has been for years. Jon Lester has been average at best for a year. Buchholz can't stay healthy.
McClure strikes me as an average, fungible pitching coach. There probably aren't many exceptional ones.
