We lost power Monday evening, didn't come back until Saturday evening.
Fortunately, was able to visit my folks in Upstate NY
for Weds - Fri, and we had planned to visit my son in Keene NH over the
week-end, which we did. So we got home Sun evening
to a fully-lit-up house. Still about 30% of town without, however, and no
school yet. Still doing the gas rationing things as well.

Kind of a moot point with Papi, I guess, but the good seems like a good one for
everyone. I do think he is worth more to us than other
teams who would look at him purely in baseball value vs the intangibles that he
has for the Sox ('face of the team', etc). I think there is
some value in that, especially at the point the Sox are in now. And it would
have look pretty bad to not sign him for the second year at
basically $13 million, if we were willing to pay him that much this coming year
(based on the arbitration $ amount they would have had to
offer).

I agree with your sentiment here Dan.  Let’s bring Ortiz back, and Ross would
be nice too.  I expect the Sox feel like their negotiation position will be
strengthened when clubs don’t start throwing lucrative 3 year deals at Ortiz.

I also think that Sox management is looking at 2013 as a bridge year until they
can get a shot at some top free agent pitchers, like Felix Hernandez for
instance.

BTW Dan – How did you fare in the storm?

They need to pay Ortiz whatever he wants, is my feeling. They can't replace the
offense he has put up. Yeah, he's a year older, and
injured, but they need him now more than ever, both from a baseball perspective
and a 'public relations' perspective. Ross, I would
like to have back but not at crazy money. I would do 2 years for him but not
three (unless it was a club option). But he wants to be here
so I think that will get done as well.

I don't see that Ortiz is worth the same money that he made the past two years.
He's 36, spent a big chunk of the season injured, and may be ready for a
slide.

If there was a deal it would need to be incentive-laden.

We do "The Trade" so we'll have financial flexibility. We're going to focus on

don't know what the players are asking, but I wish we'd locked them down for a
few more years. --
