Peter,
You can set up a tank with some live rock, and some live sand in it. Don't
put any fish or crabs in the tank, and filter it with a hang on back type of
filter (called a power filter in the US, a well known brand is Whisper).
Give it some time and the aquatic bugs in your live rock and live sand will
multiply. You can then remove some of them from the tank by taking the
filter media out of the power filter and then lightly brushing it off (or by
picking the creatures off the media one at a time by hand) in the tank. The
down side to this is that it takes a lot time to really build up a serious
population of live food in the separate tank, and it takes time to cultivate
them out. Not only that, but you wont really get a ton of them out of the
separate tank each time you do it.

Another approach is to do the separate tank, and then every couple of weeks,
take a couple of hands full of sand or a piece of live rock or two out of
that tank and switch with some sand and rock from your main tank. That will
keep your main tank somewhat populated with live food.

As far as cultures go, there are not many for saltwater fish. There are lots
for freshwater fish, but you don't want to use those with your saltwater
fish.

FWIW

Other than brine shrimp, which other live food can one raise
oneself? eg
Mysis, river shrimp etc etc etc. Also things like Green Water and so
on.

I am in Greece now, where obtaining anything is difficult when it
comes to
marines and live food is nearly out.
