agreed James
normal flux in ORP should be that your highest readings occur in the morning
when the lights come on...this is when the fish have been inactive for the
longest...once they start moving around doing their thing and when you feed,
etc., the reading will drop off through the day (if you are not adding
ozone); then the reading should be close to what it was the day before the
next morning, etc.
so with this in mind, you may want to continue to use the probe even if you
get variation in reading with other instruments on
also, if you move the probe around alot and don't allow for equilibration
time (at least 24 hours IMO), then you probably are wasting your time in
trying to find the "best" placement in the system...the sump is probably one
of the worst spots though because of turbulence; try placing it near your
sump discharge line in the tank itself

It's not important, but it's a great indicator of water issues that are
about to occur. A stable ORP that suddenly starts rising or falling
indicates that something is probably going wrong in your tank, and this
knowledge allows you to hunt the problem down and take action as early as
possible.

I look at it as my early warning system. The values don't matter, as long
as it's stable (allowing for appropriate variations during the normal
day-night cycle).
