When I first got my RO/DI unit (80 gpd Spectrapure), it did the same thing.
The O ring sealing the RO membrane was not seated properly. So, I agree
that's a good place to start.
The flow restrictor is needed to prevent damage to the RO membrane. If too
much pressure and volume of water goes through it, it could force its way
through damaging it. Most RO units come with one pre-installed, but it too
is a good thing to check. Do you have a pressure gauge? If so, what does
it read?
