silica sand ?

I cant find enough oolitic aragonite in my area to make my live sand bed. I am considering adding silica sand (play sand) to the mix. Some sources say this will cause diatoms, while others say silica & bio-available silicate are different things. Has anyone tried using silica sand & how did it work?
