"Me too" since Intrepid all the way up to and including Maverick on Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo Mobile U9200. echo N > /sys/module/video/parameters/brightness_switch_enabled fixes everything for me, and brightness in tty still works. I'll check single-user (recovery) mode to be sure KDE is not involved.
