POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Job Title: Assistant Professor (fixed term) and Extension Specialist in State and Local Gov't
Location: Dept. of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics, Michigan State University East Lansing, Michigan Appointment: Three-year initial appointment contingent on satisfactory performance (11 months per year plus 1 month per year paid vacation). Annually renewable thereafter contingent on performance and availability of funds. Annual renewals subsequent to the initial appointment will take place six months prior to the end date. Position Description: The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics and MSU Extension (MSUE) seek an Assistant Professor/State Specialist in state and local government finance and policy. The successful candidate will be expected to provide applied research, technical assistance, and peer recognized educational programming related to public finance and economic development for state and local governments in Michigan as they operate within a broader national context. The successful candidate will participate in applied research, technical assistance, peer recognized educational programs, and extramural funding efforts jointly with colleagues across the Department, College, and University, especially the newly established MSUE Center for Local Government Finance and Policy and other members of the MSU Extension local government work group. The successful candidate will develop strong working relationships with interested stakeholders outside the university system, such as local governments, local government associations, state government, citizens, consumer groups, private sector firms, etc. The successful candidate will also serve as a resource for land use, economic development, community development, water quality, leadership development and other work groups within MSU Extension. This is a full-time, fixed-term position reviewed annually for renewal. The position has a 25% research and 75% Extension (outreach & engagement) assignment. Qualifications: Earned doctorate in agricultural economics, economics, accounting, law, public finance, public administration, or related field. Candidates should possess demonstrated experience in public finance and administration, as evidenced by training, programmatic impacts, and publications. Three or more years of professional experience in working with state and local governments is preferred. Experience in Extension program delivery or demonstrated ability and skill in educational program planning, implementation and evaluation is also important as well as experience and proven ability working productively with a team. The candidate should also have demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/communities including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences. Similarly, the candidate should have proven abilities in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members to assist with program development and outreach is highly valued. Background: Michigan State University is the pioneer Land Grant University and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is a national leader in agricultural research and extension programming. The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics, one of the leading applied economics departments in the U.S., is ranked in the top five for research in agricultural economics by RePEc and has 37 tenure system faculty, 55 fixed term faculty, 90 graduate students, and 900 undergraduate students (with three majors in Agribusiness Management, Food Industry Management, Environmental Economics and Management).
