I saw "The Lord of the Rings" again last week and there was a new
"Scorpion King" trailer with it. Whether it's really supposed to be
some sort of Mummy prequel is not clear to me. There is definitely
sorcery in it (as there is in the "Mummy" movies). I think the Rock
fits the classic movie stereotypes for barbarian warriors, and that
has to be an acknowledgement of the influence of writers such as
Howard and Burroughs, with their burly barrel-chested, fine strapping
and handsome or rugged heroes (and I know they were just two of many
pulp writers who ascribed such physiques to their heroes).

"The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" are modern pulp movies, in my
opinion. They owe something to the success of the Indiana Jones
movies, which in turn inspired less successful movies like "The
Phantom" (which I enjoyed, but most people apparently did not) and
"The Shadow" (which I also enjoyed).

If "The Scorpion King" takes off, I think we'll see more modern pulp
movies, as Hollywood may then decide the genre is piqueing people's
interest again.
