Well, I must say I quite enjoyed the movie you all
directed me to; The Whole Wide World was touching and
well acted.
Despite my being previously aware of the historic
period that the Conan stories were written in, the
picture made me more conscious of the "racy" quality
of the text. I don't know how many times I have
re-read "Jewels of Gwahlur", but I have never
personally taken Conan's lines "..and I don't forget
faces -or women's figures." as being as heavy as the
way D'Onofrio delivered them! I enjoyed it quite a
bit, small mistakes and all.
I kinda liked how it had an episodic feel,
echoing the journalistic nature of Novalyne's
recording of the events. Renee Zellweger was very
good, and small, so small compared to D'Onofrio. The
physical threat that Bob Howard presented, was almost
tangible thanks to aspects like their size difference.
There was one scene change that confused me. It
was early in the picture, and Novalyne had brought Bob
to the house where she was staying, and the host
mother offered Bob some pie. Then the scene cut to
Novalyne waking, presumably ill, with Dr. Howard
tending to her. He gave a great little speech about
Robert, then that scene ended.... I couldn't figure
how the scenes were supposed to bridge together, but
I guess they are not supposed to.
How did the set look compared to Bob's real house
and room. I have never seen either in reality or in
picture.
Thanks again for your references to "The Whole Wide
World"
Cheers! Jesse
