RE: [RemEnKimi] '-ology' in Coptic

First of all, I’d like to say that in the Coptic language we are very lucky to have a very versatile and very logical language with many native prefixes/suffixes, which can be used to form words with great accuracy and subtle nuances. In my opinion, it would make an excellent scientific language, just like Greek or Latin. This is why, setting aside any nationalistic sentiment, I would like to see Coptic nouns/affixes used in the formation of new (or forgotten) words rather than Greek or any other foreign language. So although I appreciate the attraction of using Greek terms, especially in scientific terminology, which are also borrowed into the widely understood Western languages, I would always opt to keep Coptic as purely Egyptian as possible. At the very least I would try to use native grammatical constructions (which are highly developed) even if it is necessary to import a foreign noun for which there is no Coptic equivalent.

 

So, George and Markos, for the reasons above I would prefer not to use words like "u,ologia or varmokologia/varma,ia in Coptic. But, I’d like to hear your opinions on this matter as it has wider implications.

 

Joseph, cabe means ‘wise person (m.)’ so I think that e.g. cabevaqri would mean ‘pharmacologist’ rather than ‘pharmacology’?

 

Personally, I think that the best construction, supplied by George, is pijin`cbw `nvaqri ‘the study of drugs’ = ‘pharmacology’, although it is a shame that there isn’t a Coptic prefix/suffix of Egyptian origin to employ. Perhaps one will develop over time as a contraction of the above.

 

Sam, I wasn’t trying to make a statement by writing ‘Season’s Greetings’, in fact I never really thought about it – I just used it as a variation to convey the same meaning. So, this time I'll wish everyone a Happy (Gregorian) Christmas.

Could anyone tell me how in Coptic I would say ‘pharmacology’ or ‘geology’ or ‘psychology’ etc – basically, how do I form ‘–ology’ in Coptic? Or would I have to translate ‘the study of’ into Coptic in full? I have some ideas but would like you read your thoughts.
