The lock nuts go on the mounting part of the cavities and not on the threaded rods. The ends of the mounts are slotted as I recall and tapered, when you tighten the lock nuts on them it pinches the tuning rod and locks it in place. The lock nuts should be the same size as the nuts that mount the cavities to the 19 inch rack panel. As insurance most of the knobs were removed to keep unwanted hands from helping you out at co-located sites.
