And, for those who expressed concern over the use of tantalum caps: I have also seen tantalums fail in a glorious manner. That said, the Spectra radios already contain dozens of tantalums, and these do not appear prone to failure. In retrospect, I think that the temperature rating on the Vishay capacitor I referenced (85C/185F) is too low for in-vehicle use. Certainly a 105C/221F cap would be a better choice.
