I used to agree with you Ken... but I've seen some really well done 
systems actually using two series preamps. Easy mountain top to 
hand held coverage over 25 miles distance. 

Key-words "really well done systems". 

A pad might help his project... but extra cavities quickly come to 
mind as an easy try.
